The Best Year-End Functions Aren’t the Biggest. They’re the Ones People Remember.

Every September we start having the same conversation with clients. Budgets are being approved, venues are being booked and plans are finally coming together. Then, almost without fail, someone says, “Let’s just do what we did last year.”

The problem is that year-end functions are different from almost every other corporate event. Your employees attend them every year, which means they’re naturally comparing this year’s experience with the previous one. If everything feels the same, the event quickly becomes forgettable.

People Remember How an Event Made Them Feel

Very few employees will remember the order of the speeches or exactly what was on the menu six months later. What they will remember is how the event made them feel.

Did it have energy?

Did it feel different from a normal workday?

Did it feel like the company had made an effort?

Those are the things that leave a lasting impression.

Many Small Changes Can Create a Big Difference

Creating a fresh experience doesn’t mean changing everything. In fact, some of the biggest improvements come from relatively small changes.

A new event theme, a different room layout, adjusting the start and finish times, introducing different entertainment, changing the colour palette or rethinking the stage and lighting design can completely transform the atmosphere.

We’ve produced events in the same venue for the same client where, if you compared the photos side by side, you wouldn’t believe they were in the same room. That’s the power of thoughtful event design.

Don’t Ask “What Did We Do Last Year?” Ask “What Can We Do Differently This Year?”

When we start planning a year-end function, we try not to spend too much time looking backwards. Instead, we ask a different question:

“What can we do differently this year?”

That question changes the conversation completely.

At the end of the day, a year-end function is about much more than celebrating the previous twelve months. It’s an opportunity to thank your team, recognise their hard work and build excitement for the year ahead.

People don’t compare your year-end function to another company’s.

They compare it to your last one.

That’s why the question shouldn’t be, “What did we do last year?”

It should be,

“What can we do differently this year?”
